The beginning of the fall semester at UT—there’s nothing like it. From the frantic freshmen trying to add/drop classes and figure out where buildings are, to the sauntering seniors who just might show up to class on day 1, there are a big range of emotions and concerns the first week of class.
One of the biggest concerns for college students is finding community. We are wired for interpersonal relationships and are constantly looking for where we belong. During college, this communal sense is heightened by the fact that we are in transition. The tight knit High School connections will grow tenuous. As much as you may still get along with them, it’s hard to be shaped by people who don’t live in the same city as you. Day to day decisions will revolve around new events, new places, and new people. At UT there will be roommates, your dorm floor, classmates, FIGs, study groups, intramural teams, NCAA teams, workout partners, coworkers, and more than 1,100 student organizations. Who you are at the end of these four years will largely be determined by which communities you choose.
Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.
