What Should We Do for God?
What should you do for God? You can worship Him. You can serve Him. You can praise Him. You can obey Him. You can follow Him. All of these actions are true and God does like for us to do these things, however, it is not God’s focus for us to do these things. From the very beginning we can see that God’s desire was not for us to do all of these outward actions but rather to simply enjoy Him. Worshipping, serving, praising, obeying, and following Him result from our enjoyment of God.
It is natural for us to want to do things for God but the Bible shows us that God only wants us to enjoy Him. We do not have to do anything but just take Him in every day. After creating Adam, God did not say, “You must worship Me in this way,” or “You must serve Me in that way.” On the contrary, after creating Adam, God placed him in front of the Tree of Life for him to eat and enjoy. We see in the Bible that the Tree of Life typifies God. This means that God intended for Adam to enjoy Him as food. This is one way to enjoy God.
It was God’s purpose to be our spiritual food and we can see that in John 6:51, 57. These two verses show that God wants us to eat Him and be dependent on Him. When we eat Him, we live because of him. So how can we eat Him? Christ is available as food in His Word. John 1:1 says that the Word is God. A great way to enjoy God as our food is to read the Word and pray it back to God. One of my favorite verses, Jeremiah 15:16, is another verse that says that we can eat the Word and it is also a verse that I personally like to pray back to God.
Your words were found and I ate them and Your word became to me the gladness and joy of my heart, for I am called by Your name, O Jehovah, God of hosts. –Jeremiah 15:16
When I pray back this verse to God, I pray something like this: “Lord Jesus! I want to eat Your words today. I want Your Word to be gladness and joy to me.” By doing this, I get to enjoy God. Through this enjoyment, I have tasted and seen that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8)!
I am the kind of person that wants to do everything right and please everyone around me. This is how I also feel towards God. I want to make Him happy and do everything that He wants me to do. However, I should not think this way. Instead, I should focus on enjoying Him as the wonderful and rich Christ that He is! That is all He wants from us!
Imagine you have spent hours in the kitchen preparing a delicious meal for dinner. Your dinner guests arrive at your home and they are so touched that you cooked this meal for them so they bust out the yellow kitchen gloves and start scrubbing your floors, washing your windows, and cleaning out the fireplace. What would you think of this? You cooked this meal for your guests to sit, relax, and enjoy the meal you have prepared, not to have them labor on your house. This is exactly what God has done for us. He just wants us to enjoy what He has prepared for us.
God can be many things to us (food, light, strength, comfort, peace etc.) but we must learn to enjoy Him through those things. He humbled Himself to become a man so that we can have His life. He made Himself so available to us so that He could be our enjoyment. So what should we do for God? We can simply enjoy Him.
