I. God’s Purpose in Creation
In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… all things came into being through Him, and apart from Him not one thing came into being which has come into being. —John 1:1, 3
The Gospel of John begins with the same three words the entire Bible does-in the beginning. Thus John encapsulates and even precedes the revelation in Genesis 1:1. God’s creation is linked to His eternal purpose (Eph. 3:9-11).
God created not because He was in a creative mood one day and not merely to display His might, but to provide the setting for His purpose to be accomplished.
God’s purpose in creation was to form a spirit within man where He could enter into man as life. Man’s spirit is on par with the creation of the heavens and the earth and even gives them significance (Zech. 12:1). Because man has a spirit, he can contact, receive, contain, and experience God.
This summer, Christian Students on Campus has been studying John 1 with incoming freshmen at orientation.
