Why is witnessing important to us as Christians?
Because the Lord needs a testimony on this earth, and this testimony is propagated by our speaking to others about the Lord Jesus. By witnessing, the Lord’s testimony is passed on to new generations. Every Christian should be a witness, not just an ordained few. College students are especially positioned to witness to others on campus. Actually, this is the best time to start witnessing to those around us and building up this life long habit.
Acts 22:15 – For you will be a witness to Him unto all men of the things which you have seen and heard.
The book of Acts tells us that to be a witness is simply to speak about the things that we have seen and heard. If we have seen and experienced Christ in a personal way, then we are qualified to be a witness. The thing, which we have seen and heard, is actually not merely a thing- IT is a PERSON named Jesus Christ.
1 John 4:14 – And we have beheld and testify that the Father has sent the Son as the Savior of the world
For us to witness to others, there needs to be both an INFLOW and an OUTFLOW.
Inflow: reading the Bible, seeing who Christ is
Outflow: speaking to others about the Christ who we see
In order for us to testify or speak concerning Jesus, we need a fresh, daily touch with Him in our spirit. Then we can’t help but speak about and share this Person whom we love.
Four types of people we should witness to:
1) Those we don’t know
The Samaritan woman, after seeing Jesus, went away into the city and said, “Come, see a man!” (John 4:28-29)
2) Our family
“Go to your house, to your own people, and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you.” (Mark 5:19)
3) Our classmates, coworkers, and associates
Paul was proclaiming Jesus in the synagogues, that this One is this Son of God. (Acts 9:20)
4) Our close friends
Philip preached to Nathanael, a close friend of his. (John 1:45)
